Ladwig Takes Win at NOPI
Springnationals
Team Chevy driver Marty Ladwig captured his second national
event victory of the season at the NOPI Springnationals at Old
Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Ladwig also set a new national elapsed time record for the Pro
FWD category when he defeated Gary Gardella in the final
round. "It felt awesome to set the new record and to win the
event at the same time," said Ladwig. "This was a big event
for us and the win keeps us virtually tied in the points
championship."
Ladwig entered Sunday's eliminator in his Lucas Oil Chevrolet
with K&N Engineering products and qualified in the No. 2
position after running 7.207 seconds at 203.06 mph. He
defeated Chris Rado in round one with a 7.210 second run at a
career-best speed of 203.31 mph to earn a spot in the finals
against Gardella.
In the championship heat, Ladwig's Ecotec-powered Cobalt took
the win and the national record with a 7.167 second run at
202.88 mph. "As usual our K&N Engineering air and oil filters
did their jobs in helping us win," said Ladwig. "We especially
rely on our high performance K&N oil filters because we run
very high oil pressures to keep our 1500 horsepower 4 cylinder
engine alive. K&N has been an important part of keeping our
record of zero engine failures for 2 ½ seasons."
This was Ladwig's 18th career victory at an NHRA sanctioned
sport-compact event. The Chevy Sport Compact Drag Racing Team
took what the racetrack gave them and that included putting
out as much power as they could. "Tuning-wise the team did a
great job," said Ladwig. "It was important to hold up my end
as the driver."
The team is on break until June and Ladwig went home to Texas.
"We'll perform regular maintenance, but this Chevrolet runs
great," he said. "It's pretty much the same setup as we used a
Pomona at the end of last year and it's a credit to the guys
at Roush and GM Racing who built the car."
The next stop on the schedule is the NOPI Colorado Nationals
in June at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Colorado.
